INFORMATION

The Study Groups on Performing Arts of Southeast Asia (PASEA), Applied Ethnomusicology (AE), and Indigenous Music & Dance (IMD) of the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance (ICTMD) are excited to announce a joint symposium, exploring commonalities and differences in aims, scope, and methods between the three Study Groups, and seeking to inspire and advance synergies. In order to do so, the program committee invites presentations on themes bridging Study Groups, as well as proposals touching on the focus of any one of the Study Groups. We have selected the following three overarching themes:

1. Developments in approaching music and dance as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This includes issues of heritagization, tourism, commercialization, ownership, agency, transboundary flows, diaspora, migration, innovation, and generational differences.

2. Music and dance interventions after humanmade and natural disasters.

This theme includes any presentation dealing with music and dance in challenging circumstances ranging from “sudden disasters” such as wars, flood, and earthquakes to “gradual disasters” such as oppressing minorities and Indigenous peoples or rising sea levels.

3. New generations: 21st century technologies, policies and realities.

Under this theme, we invite presentations dealing with the rapidly changing environments for next generations of musicians and dancers, including shifting political and funding perspectives, youth initiatives, fusion, social media, virtual performance, and AI. In addition, proposals pertinent to developments in the field of any one of the individual Study Groups are welcome. Please indicate the primary Study Group to which you submit.
