GETTING AROUND CHIANG MAI

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

From Bangkok, taking the bus is one of the most popular ways to travel.

Taking the bus takes anywhere from 10-13 hours.

INFORMATION

One of the most convenient ways to get around Chiang Mai is by using a Rod Daeng (Songthaews), which means "two rows" in Thai. It refers to the two bench-style seats in the back of the truck. The truck can hold up to 10 passengers.

In Chiang Mai, Rod Daeng (Songthaew) are mostly red in colour. It is an affordable form of transport in Chiang Mai as the fares are typically low.

HOW TO PRIVATELY HIRE A ROD DAENG (SONGTHAEW):

  1. You can hire a Rod Daeng (Songthaew) through the Grab application. This would be ideal if you are travelling in a bigger group.

  2. You can also call the hotline for the Rod Daeng (Songthaew) company and book through them directly. (Hotline will be updated soon)

OTHER FORMS OF TRANSPORTATION IN CHIANG MAI INCLUDE:

Tuk Tuk: These are more expensive than Rod Daeng (Songthaew), but they are a fun way to travel around and you get to fully immerse yourself in enjoying Thailand’s culture as well.

Ride Hailing Apps like Grab/Bolt: It might be pricier, but these apps give you a fixed price, which might be better than negotiating for a price, as some Rod Daeng (Songthaew) or Tuk Tuk drivers may try to overcharge you for the ride.
