TRAVEL BY BUS

One of the most popular ways to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is by bus, with the journey taking approximately 10 to 13 hours.

INFORMATION

There are two major bus companies offering travel services from Bangkok to Chiang Mai: Nakhonchai Air and Sombat Tour. Bus tickets can be purchased online or directly at the bus station and printed at kiosks on the day of travel.

TRAVEL BY NAKHONCHAI AIR

Nakhonchai Air was founded in 1986. They aim to meet the needs of service users with a management system with good governance.

There are first class and gold class buses for your trip to and from Chiang Mai. Do note that there are different layouts for the different buses.

Bus to Chiang Mai: Gold Class Social Distancing Bus V2 (Price: 693 THD/Per Ticket)

This bus can hold up to 31 passengers. Customers can choose a single window seat or a double seat in the middle. However, there are curtains available for your privacy. Each seat is equipped with a massage system. The facilities include a personal TV screen and USB ports. There is also a reading light, a mini table, a cup holder and also a leg rest. A blanket is also provided.

The bus company also provides a snack bag with water, a bag of snacks and other beverages, which will be placed at your seat before boarding and a sandwich will be served shortly after departure.  There will also be a packet of wet tissue handed to you before arrival in Chiang mai.

 

The approximate travel time to Chiang Mai would be 9 hours. However, it can also take up to 11 hours.

Bus to Bangkok: Gold Class Redesigned Model (Price: 693 THD/Per Ticket)

This bus can hold up to 32 seats. The passengers' seating arrangement would be double seats in rows of 2. Each seat is equipped with a massage system. The facilities include a personal TV screen and USB ports. There is also a reading light, a mini table, a cup holder and also a leg rest.  A blanket is also provided.

The bus company also provides a snack, a beverage, a bottle of water and a sandwich which will be served to you shortly after departure from Chiang Mai.  There will also be a packet of wet tissue handed to you before your arrival back in Bangkok. 

The approximate travel time to Bangkok would be 9 hours.

Lady Zone for Solo Female Travelers

To ensure greater comfort and peace of mind for women traveling alone, Nakhonchai offers a dedicated Lady Zone on their buses. The designated seats will be clearly distinguished by its dark pink headrests and clear signage displaying the seat number, along with a label indicating it's reserved for “Polite Skri” only. 

An external sticker on the bus will also mark the location of the Lady Zone, which is convenient in helping passengers find their zones and seats. When booking tickets, a Lady Zone symbol will be shown to help customers choose the correct seats.

NAKHONCHAI AIR BUS TERMINAL 

Nakhonchai Air Bus Terminal offers a variety of facilities for travellers. Inside, you’ll find a 7-Eleven convenience store, Cafe Amazon, and a drink shop. Just outside the station, there’s a canteen with multiple food stalls, which will be perfect if you want to grab a quick meal before your journey. There is also a spacious and air-conditioned waiting area that provides a comfortable place to relax before departure, and toilets are available for 10 THB per entry.

CHIANG MAI BUS TERMINAL 

Chiang Mai Bus Terminal provides a few facilities for travelers. The air-conditioned waiting area allows travellers a comfortable place to rest before departure and a small bakery located just behind it is perfect for a quick snack. You can also find a 7-Eleven at the back of the terminal and a spacious parking lot for added convenience.

BANGKOK BUS TERMINAL (CHATUCHAK)

Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak) offers a range of facilities for passengers, including ticketing and information counters for booking tickets and getting travel information, air-conditioned waiting rooms for comfort, and various food and beverage options such as fast food restaurants, food stalls, convenience stores, and vending machines serving Thai and international cuisine. There are SIM card stalls too. Well-maintained restrooms are available, although a small fee of 10 baht might be required. Other services available are car and motorcycle parking spaces, luggage storage (5:00 PM - 10:00 PM), 24/7 locker luggage storage (200 Baht/Day), 24 hours first aid, ATM machines, as well as a massage parlour. Facilities for passengers with disabilities, including ramps and accessible restrooms are available. These facilities aim to provide a comfortable and convenient experience for passengers traveling to and from Chatuchak Bus Terminal.

CHIANG MAI BUS TERMINAL 3

Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3 provides a range of facilities for passengers, including ticketing and information counters, non-airconditioned waiting areas, food and beverage options such as coffee and tea stalls and convenience stores, restrooms are available, although a small fee of 10 baht might be required and they are not as well-maintained as the Bangkok Bus Terminal’s, parking spaces for cars and motorcycles, luggage storage services (30-50 Baht per bag), charging services (20 Baht), ATMs for convenient financial transactions, as well as massage chairs These facilities aim to ensure a comfortable and convenient travel experience for passengers. Taxi services are also available located right outside the station, but we would not recommend using it, and instead book a Rot Daeng for yourself beforehand.

Sombat tour was founded in 1942. They have been determined to develop their service and increase the industry quality over the years to meet with the international standards.​

Bus to Chiang Mai: Supreme Class (1st Class Air Conditioned Bus)

The passengers’ sitting arrangement would be 1 on the left and 2 on the right. The chairs are adjustable up to 135 degrees. The facilities include a personal TV screen (available only on some buses), snacks and beverages. A pillow will be provided. There is also a restroom located in the back of the bus.

The bus will stop at the bus stop for a short 20 minutes break. There are restrooms available here.

A meal is provided at the bus stop for VIP bus. You can use the ticket for the buffet meal or for getting a snack or drink. The approximate travel time to Chiang Mai would be 9 hours.
