TRAVEL TO CHIANG MAI

TRAVEL BY TRAIN

One of the most popular ways to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is by train, which takes approximately 10 to 13 hours. Overnight trains are available and offer comfortable sleeping options for a more convenient journey.

INFORMATION

Trains depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, a large railway station in Chatuchak District.

The station has easy rail connections to Suvarnabhumi Airport via the MRT Blue Line & Airport Rail Link, and a direct connection to Don Muang Airport via the SRT Dark Red Line. All trains to Chiang Mai also make a stop at Don Muang Station, the station directly connected to the airport. If you are flying into Don Muang Airport, you can take the train straight away from this station.

TRAINS AND FARES

There are 4 overnight trains and 1 day train from Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bangkok) to Chiang Mai.

From Chiang Mai to Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bangkok), there are 3 overnight trains and 2 day trains that run daily

The best train to take is Special Express CNR 9  - It allows you a full day in Chiang Mai and has the newest and most comfortable coaches.

 

The best train for the views is Express 51, which passes by the most scenic parts of the route in the morning. 

Trains labelled ‘CNR’ are the new and flagship coaches of the railway. These were recently built and procured, and are the best option for most travellers with its new and comfortable coaches.

ABOUT KRUNG THEP APHITWAT STATION

Krung Thep Aphiwat Station offers many necessities, from shower facilities to remote medical services.

Charging points are located throughout the station. The power sockets require 2-pin plugs or USB heads. Both the Lost and Found Room and the First Aid are located on the concourse level

ATMs can be found throughout the whole station. A remote medical service is available if you ever feel ill and require basic medication.

Lockers are available around the whole station. Prices are determined by the size of the baggage and the duration of the rental.

Toilets are available around the station, some even have showers. But a small fee is required to use the shower facilities. Prayer rooms are available at the station for our muslim friends.

The food court has a wide range of stores along with 2 halal stalls for our muslim friends. It is located at Gate 4. Payment methods include only cash and TrueMoney (a Thai digital payment platform).

Note: Halal stores close at 19:00pm, earlier than the rest. The rest of the stalls close at 21:00pm.

Other facilities include:

- A small museum featuring old station items, located near Gate 4 on the concourse level.

- A first class lounge located in the same area as the Lost and Found and First Aid. 

- Vending machine food and drink options such as 7/11, Tao Bin and many other selling snacks and beverages. There are also a few physical stores selling more than just food. 

ABOUT CHIANG MAI STATION

Chiang Mai Station maybe be small, but it has just as many necessities.

The ticketing counter can be found right at the entrance. As well as charging stations on the left and right of the station.

The ATM and the toilet can be found in the same area as the charging station. A small fee is required to use the toilet and shower facilities. 3 THB for the toilet and 10 THB for the showers.

Enjoy your meals without being weighed down by your baggage. The baggage station is located at the entrance of the station, opposite the ticketing counter. The prices are based off the size of the baggage.

Motorbike rentals are available right outside the station. As well as an information counter in the station.

There are restaurants, cafes, and convenience stores located inside and outside of the station to choose from.  

SLEEPER TRAINS:

SPECIAL EXPRESS TRAIN 51 (OLDER TRAIN)

The Special Express Train 51 offers first, second and third class seats. Second Class is the most common accommodation type, and each carriage has around 40 sleeper berths20 upper and 20 lower. There are also dedicated second class carriages for handicapped users, and for women and children.

During the day in both classes, a seating area is provided. Beds are then folded down and made by an attendant during the evening. First and second class trains all provide clean mattresses, bedding, sheets, pillowcases, a blanket and curtains for privacy.

Bottom berths usually have slightly more space, as well as a window, hence it is more expensive than the top bunk.

Full meal sets are available, priced from 150THB to 190THB, many drink options are available too

Similarly, the Special Express Train 10 offers first and second class seats. Second Class is the more popular accommodation type, and each carriage has around 40 sleeper berths20 upper and 20 lower. There are also dedicated second class carriages for handicapped users, and for women and children.

If you are taking Special express train 10, it departs at 18:00 pm and there are seats available for both parties till the evening. In the evening an attendant will come by to assemble the bed. First and Second class trains all provide clean mattresses, bedding, sheets, pillowcases, a blanket and curtains for privacy.  First Class trains provide a private room, suited for two, with connecting room options. Each room comes with two beds/seats, a sink, a television and a table

You will have access to the showers to freshen up as well as a sink and a cabinet to store your items. In the event that you get hungry, there is a diner car providing a range of food and drinks.
